Formula E Takes to Paris Streets for Very First Time

The all-electric Formula E series took to the streets of the City of Light for the first time this weekend. This marks the first time that Paris has hosted a major Formula One race since 2008 and becomes only the 12th global city to join the racing series. Being that the global governing body, the FIA, is headquartered in Paris, it only makes sense that the French city should join the ranks of other major cities that host Formula E events to include Beijing, Berlin, Moscow and London. “We’ve got the DNA of motorsport in France,” said French Formula E driver Jean-Eric Vergne. “This sends a signal that France is here.”

With so many historical buildings and landmarks centered in the heart of the city, it only made sense for FIA to build the racing circuit around the oldest and most distinguished landmarks in Paris. The 1.9-mile circuit snakes around the city’s ritzy seventh arrondissement passing nostalgic cafes that mark every corner before winding through historic landmarks to include the Hotel del Invalides, home to Napoleon Banaprte’s final resting place. Those on the front stretch and those watching at home were able to see the world-famous Eiffel Tower that is located less than a half-mile from the track. What the circuit lacks in size (the shortest circuit on the racing calendar) it definitely makes up for in glitz and glamour.

The Paris ePrix is the first major sporting event to take place in the French capital since the terrorist attacks that happened last November. “After what happened in Paris in the last few months it’s very important to show that we can organize a big event like this one,” said Alain Prost, a four-time Formula One world champion, and co-founder of the Renault racing team, e.Dams. “It shows that France is a strong country, added Vergne, who was born 45 minutes away from Paris. “It is a strong signal that goes beyond motorsport.”
