Every year, millions of Americans gather together and bear witness to one of the greatest events in live sports competitions, the NFL Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is far more than just another football game, it is a spectacle all to itself, with the singer of the American National Anthem and the performers of the Halftime Show garnering nearly as much attention as the game.
With the staggering number of people at home watching the game’s broadcast on TV, the airtime has also become a valuable commodity for brands looking for prime advertising time. This year, two of the most popular Super Bowl commercials showcased a couple of the most exciting exotic cars for 2016.
According to the team at Google, the two ads that generated the greatest volume of searches respectively during the Big Game were the commercials from Audi and Acura used to promote the R8 and NSX.
Acura’s commercial showcased the brand new 2017 NSX as it is slowly revealed to the audience in bits and pieces before finally revealing the NSX logo towards the end of the 30 second commercial. All the while, David Lee Roth’s vocals from Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil” bellow out in excitement.
While Acura’s '80’s rock inspired NSX commercial went for the all out excitement vibe, Audi went in a more heartfelt direction. Instead, their commercial focused on an elderly retired astronaut who appears depressed by his current lifestyle. Seeking the adventure he once felt in the vast reaches of outer space, he finds himself when his son shows up in his new Audi R8. The former astronaut sits in the driver’s seat, hits the ignition and feels alive for presumably the first time since returning to earth many moons ago.
