When people talk about a racing line, they aren’t referring to any kind of physical markings on the track but rather an imaginary line that drivers follow to maximize their lap time. Depending on the situation, it may be best for you to enter a corner from the outside and dive inward or vice versa. Determining the optimal racing line is a skill that is essential to drive an exotic car at a high level.
The first factor that plays into determining the racing line is your braking technique and how early you hit the brakes before entering a corner. As a basic rule for exotic car racing on our Las Vegas racetrack, you want to get the majority of the braking done before you enter the turn. The best way to find out when you should start braking is to brake earlier on your first lap then gradually begin to brake later.
In order to hit the right line, you need to have a strong entry point for the turn. Cornering in an exotic car at high speeds can be nerve racking, but doing so properly is essential to improving your overall lap time. Enter the corner too early your line will tighten up, but enter the corner too late and you’ll swing wide and understeer. Your entry point will have an effect on whether or not you hit the corners apex correctly or not. Similar to braking, your entry point for turns is best found through trial and error.
