Ford Halts Production of Mustang Due to Lagging Sales

On October 10th, Ford announced that production of the iconic Mustang has been halted due to lagging sales and a surplus of inventory. Ford’s Mustang inventory at the end of September stood at 89 days; this is 50 percents higher than the target inventory of 60 days. The Flat Rock manufacturing plant outside of Detroit that currently employs 3,702 workers will be affected by this stoppage.

Sales of the sixth-generation Mustang have declined 32 percent in the United States while sales of the Chevy Camaro have increased for the first time in the past two years. The success of the Camaro is largely credited to the very generous incentive program that is being offered by General Motors. It is important to point out that a temporary stoppage in production does not suggest that the Mustang is on the chopping block. Kelli Felker, spokeswomen for Ford stated “We continue to match production with demand. Mustang remains the top seller in its segment in total and retail sales.”
